In "Money" by Martin Amis, John Self is a wealthy, vulgar and self-absorbed director who is consumed by greed and ambition. He is a caricature of 1980s Wall Street excess, obsessed with making money and indulging in every pleasure available. Self's life spirals out of control as his addiction to sex, drugs, and alcohol leads him to make dangerous decisions. Through his reckless behavior, Amis criticizes the excess and materialism of the era. Despite Self's many flaws, Amis manages to make him a relatable character, and the book is a darkly humorous commentary on the excesses of the time.
