TagExcellent Women

Excellent Women by Barbara Pym is a witty and charming novel that follows the life of Mildred Lathbury, a single woman in her thirties living in post-WWII England. Mildred is a self-described "excellent woman," someone who is reliable, practical, and always willing to help others. She becomes caught up in the lives of her new neighbors, including the glamorous and mysterious Helena Napier and her husband, Rockingham. Mildred's relationship with Helena and Rockingham leads her to question her own desires and the societal expectations placed upon her. Ultimately, Mildred learns to assert herself and make choices that are true to her own desires. Pym's novel is a delightful commentary on gender roles and the constraints placed upon women in mid-century England.
