Charles Yu is a Taiwanese-American author known for his inventive and philosophical approach to science fiction and storytelling. Born in 1976, Yu studied biology and English at the University of California, Berkeley, and later earned a law degree from Columbia Law School. Despite practicing law, Yu pursued his passion for writing, and his debut novel, “How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe” (2010), garnered critical acclaim for its blend of metafictional elements, humor, and existential exploration. The novel follows the adventures of Charles Yu (a fictionalized version of the author), a time machine repairman who embarks on a journey through time and memory to find his missing father. Yu’s writing is characterized by its imaginative concepts, introspective themes, and playful deconstruction of narrative conventions, making him a distinctive voice in contemporary speculative fiction.
